Small break from Domain Blogging

I’m going to take a small break from domain related blogging.

I need to set up a new server soon & want to concentrate a little more time over at my SEM related blog. I will be answering direct contacts questions like usual for anyone that contacts me. I also want to concentrate on a bigger partnership service that will be launching soon.

In the meantime please realize to business owners, consumers etc Domain registration numbers mean absolutely nothing. How much you earn per click off parking means nothing. With domains they will get familiar with the extensions & domain types they use in their daily life. No one repeatedly comes back to a parked domain. No consumer will think about .co or even .日本 if there isn’t anything developed there. This is what I’m preparing for.

Also final tip I read online that Google will stop URL forwarding for Domain parking. This will make it completely easy for them to deindex your domains from their index. My best performing domains I’ll 100% admit I moved the domain to their own servers wrote unique related titles, descriptions, & keywords & even added analytics trackings to make sure I can see where the traffic is coming from. By doing this Google or Yahoo hasn’t deindexed the domains & the performance was great. I don’t mind Parking as a what to do with extra domains but Google is really making parking as “you make money if someone comes to your domain by mistake only”. Please realize that.

also my work schedule is getting a bit more hectic. International Digital Advertising is just getting so much more demanding compared to last year. My work title is Senior Search Specialist but I’ve been doing more of total digital strategic planning for the last few months. Because of my role in this I truly see domains are just one part of the digital plan.

See yall (yeah I use yall)

Follow the concept not the wrapper

I realize there are a few wordpress sites gone up on Japanese IDNs lately. Maybe they went up before I started writing about my development. I’d just like to admit there are actually easier ways to do what I’m doing if you look hard enough. Actually even without WordPress especially. I want to come clean & fully say that just because WordPress is a free too the rest of what goes into the backend isn’t.

I do want my blog readers to test & develop & hopefully not overlap in my exact space.  I’ve paid for themes, I’ve paid for modifications & just want my readers to know what to expect if you want to get the same results as me. You might see one part of my site realize what I used then get disappointed that it doesn’t work the same way for you.

I haven’t used them yet there are some solutions that you can buy a all in one solution. To make things better these might be better than what I’m using. Also in Japan Japanese blogs will put scripts on them & recommend you buy them without ever actually putting up a single site or even owning a license. Do your research ask the sales team plenty of questions. I remember recently having to return an email subscription program because I asked them plenty of questions about Japanese compatibility. Everything seemed fine until I bout the software & the email text wasn’t able to be translated in Japanese. There was no option. It would have ended up in user’s spam box.

Anyway keep striving. I’m digging my results & even bought 2 new domains to test out. Data is important guys.

epik.com will it be IDN comptible for Japan?

I’ve recently had a chance to look over Epik.com’s sites & services.

After a long thought I think they are doing a great thing for the domain community. Many domain holders have to fess up that development can bring you more revenue. I like the fact there is also a fee with their system. That makes site owners exclusive. Reality is some people won’t want to pay for development so those who get in early reap the benefits.

I’ve also compared it a bit to what I’m making for my Japanese sites. My only gripe is it would be cool to have one more layer of detail for products. They may not notice also that the links don’t work correctly in some countries. This though can be said with my sites too since I built for Japan I guess I really don’t care or bothered to check if links are ok in all other countries.

For $29 to $300 a month I think it’s a good deal if you have product related domains. If I didn’t create my network myself I’d probably be willing to use their system or test it out if they made a Japanese version. On the inside I think my system is a bit better because it’s also mobile & iPhone compatible & can correctly give stats for mobile. This is a bit important for Japan. Their system though may be way better in terms of ease of use, & the big one: Their sites do look great.

Anyhoot I can see how their system is making domains more valuable again. Some people want to see parked traffic stats before buying a domain. Epik brings in new revenue. With parking you can’t promote your site. With Epik sites you are in control of your domain. I’m all for that.

While I was working for the search marketing company owned by Value Commerce in Tokyo I always thought that the next step in mass domain development would be Domains plus CPA models. That was my inspiration for trying to create a shopping & travel network.

If those guys ever contact me about the Japanese market I’ll try to do what’s in the best interest for everyone.
Let’s just hope they don’t ask before Christmas or my 30 to 50 sites go live. Last time I inspired development for Japanese started to notice & made IDN Subdomains to take over the SERPs. I don’t want that happening again.

IDN development notes week 3

It’s been a bit over three weeks since I started my new set of sites. I really would advice people developing to start with 2 or 3 three sites at the same time if you are developing yourself. My first 3 sites & settings were a little bit different. I noticed one site in particular took off well. After three weeks & now 7 sites I duplicated the settings for the best site to the others.

I’ve been busy so this weekend I have no time to create new sites. I am seeing orders come in & my sites being added to search engine results.

This week during the week I
1. fixed my mobile analytics
2. fixed my mobile version of the sites (still working on that)
3. Put in ValueCommerce instead of Adsense in one site.
4. Added new products to a few of the sites
5. Fixed my PC sitemap

One of the reasons why I keep writing that it’s good to start off small with development is because most of my changes that took time you’d never notice them.
Also sometimes you use new versions of code that might not work. Just take the code from an older site that works & see what was the difference.

Now I’m up to 7 sites, few products being sold already.

The biggest thing I observed was that adsense doesn’t make sense anymore when starting a site. I’m taking all adsense ads off of my new sites. It actually slows the pages down, & I might be penalized for that.

Goals for next month:
1. at least 7 new sites
2. Test a new system with a few sites
3. Get a new server (Dreamhost sucks it’s big but it’s not too good) before getting this I only used Verio servers at over $100 a month for a VPS. I’m thinking about what hosting company I want to use.
4. Buy one of the SEO gerls at work lunch to give me some tips on getting into Yahoo or what I can improve on. Long terms my sites are OK but I do want to get them in a bit quicker & have a bit of advice.
5. Tweak my Japan mobile & iPhone versions a bit more.

The current sites I have up are OK but next month I want to use some better domains. I purposely didn’t use the best premium domains. September, October, November, December. I have 4 months till Christmas. During one of these months I have to work solely on the design. Probably in November. September & October will be about creating new sites. I want to see if I can have at least 30 – 40 up by end of October with new products being added daily.

Pretty Good post about Domainers & PCC

I was originally a site developer before getting into investing in domains. Even though I couldn’t manage daily upkeep of every domain back then being a developer & then having a business plan of depending on parking to me just doesn’t make sense.

I am not against domain parking but I see it as a where to store domains I can’t develop.

These are the factors working against you.

1. Google has an exclusive contract with most of the domain parking companies. They can’t use another feed.
2. Domain parking was good before because up until IE 7 Internet Explorer automatically directed any keyword you put into the browser to the dot com. That feature is GONE
3. Google has the parking revenue & statistics data & invested in Mozilla & Firefox & they changed from redirecting to dot com automatically to Google search.
4. In Google before when you searched for YOURDOMAIN.com it used to give one result. Your domain. Not anymore it gives you a variety of competitors especially if your domain is parked.
5. A few years ago if you ran the Content network for advertising there wasn’t a choose you had to advertising on parked pages. Now this is one of the first thing we turn off. (Sorry it’s true, we look conversions not clicks)

Think about it Google controls Domain parking & has told us that we have let the domain just lie there, we can’t promote it, we can’t backlink to it, they will usually deindex it from the search listings. Should you run a business on this.

I want the option to create a network drive people to my site & create conversions anyway I can.

I was a bit inspired to write this after seeing this.

http://domainshane.com/16-reasons-why-you-arent-going-to-make-any-money-on-ppc/

I don’t think it’s at a point where IDN investors are not making money but it can be improved.

These are the points I fully agree with

1.  Just because it gets 24,300 searches for those keywords and a $7.40 CPC doesn’t mean you’re going to get any of those people

3. You paid more for the domain than you could possibly make on PPC in the next 3 years

6.  Somebody is going to outwork you, outspend you, and out SEO you for that money

8.  You don’t know what to do with the visitors once they get to your site.

12. You won’t pay for help. You,  like everyone else in domaining,  think they are an SEO master

15. You spend more time reading than doing and trying

16. PPC is a poor business model

#3 & #6 I believe if you can pay over $1,000 for one domain you can find someone or a team to develop for you.

I want IDN holders to develop. I want them to start looking into it & build up their own development tools. I know I don’t write about what software I’m using etc because I’ve been collecting & buying php scripts, plugins & Templates for about 13 years now. Even for the new shopping sites I’m using some old plugins plus new ones. This got me up & running to a good phase 1.

I’ve gotten a few emails & comments about this blog going a bit private to concentrate on development more. I think it’s time to look into it more. Since no one links to this site or credits it anyway I’m not worried about loosing traffic.

To sum things up these 5 things killed parking. The parking companies make less but Google makes more.

JPRS only company to submit application for .日本

http://jidnc.jp/?p=690

After reading a bit more I went to the homepage of the  Japan Internet Domain Name Council.

I read a post that states the deadline for the application was the 16th & after looking again & noticed it showed the number of applicants.

応募者数 : 1社

Number of Applicants: 1 Company

I thought I read it wrong or something. This is great hopefully they quickly launch & give me my

ダイヤモンド.日本 (Diamond)
格安旅行.日本 (Cheap Travel)
格安ホテル.日本 (Cheap Hotels)

& I thought this day sucked.

*** Update after thinking about it. If only one company applied the company that everyone else thought would get it anyway. Then why did they make us wait this long? They could have just cut to the chase.

Let’s see who’s domains become examples for dot Nihon. I might try to pretty a few up.

JPRS submits it’s domestic application to manage .日本

I just saw that JPRS has submitted it’s application to manage the IDN ccTLD .日本

I doubt that anyone would rival their request to mange the IDN extension. They already manage .jp extension & most likely already have a set promotional plan in place for the launch of this finally. There was actually a domain related meeting this month & I guess I could attend but I’d probably fall asleep during it.

Here’s the links to the over 100 page PDF application.

I expect new money to come in after .日本 they pushed in advertising a while back but the things they stumbled & fell on wasn’t their fault.

********UPDATE********
Seems like JPRS was the only company to even submit an application!!!!

Congrats JPRS you’ve Won .日本!!!!

Question of the Year

I like to look at those problems people have & find the answers. We have to resolve client inquiries with traffic & statistics all the time so I think today’s question can apply to some of you.

Now I want to say I’m pretty happy using Wixi’s parking service. I’ve done a few tweeks lately & revenue from parking is actually getting better little by little. Even though I’ve pulled off domains & started developing.

So my question of the year is:

Let’s say you have a domain parked. You get 2,000 visits for the month. You have a 40% Click through rate but your average click costs is .03 cents.

How is this possible?

Should I be worried about rogue bots? Spammers? Will I get this domain kicked off parking because the Click through rate is too high.

Ok that’s it for me let’s see what answers you guys give then I’ll update ya.
I’ll wait till I have a few comments by various individuals then I’ll answer it fully.
I’ll tell you if one of you get it right.

Development notes Monday

I’m up to about 6 of these new shopping sites. I might put up 2 more today. I put up 2 yesterday while suffering with a bad cold. There’s no way I can say it but development isn’t easy. I don’t want to make it look easy either. When I ran the IDN Forum I really wanted to get people starting to think about development if you start small your knowledge expands greatly. I started creating these shopping sites not knowing which would really get the most traffic. I’ve discovered a lot in the tweaking of these sites & looking through the stats.

I’m not sure which site it’s from yet but I’m surprised to get a few conversions already.

If you do create sites like mine please resist the urge to put products that don’t relate to the domain name. The design on my sites suck right now. I’ll admit it. The sites do have a few hundred pages indexed in Google already each though. Yahoo is not going to be so easy I think right now.

It’s Summer holiday right now so overall web surfing is down a bit. The sites are doing well as far as traffic still growing each day.

IDN Shopping sites results

Recently since July 31st I started to implement a few IDN shopping sites. It’s only less than two weeks but I’ll share some traffic stats.

I created 4 sites close to the same week. 2 dot coms & 2 dot jp sites. The extension didn’t really make much of a difference it’s content is more important. The last site I put up gets the most traffic so far. Content is important & looking at the competitor space.

I compare my traffic stats to what I would have gotten if it was just parked. My best of these sites gets 30 uniques a day. Even though you may think this isn’t much it’s only been built less than 2 weeks ago. Currently there is no traffic from Yahoo. Yahoo Japan’s Site explorer is currently down & has been down for like over a week so there is no fast indexing in Yahoo for these sites.

The 4 sites all have different amounts of posted content. I would recommend having at least a plan to have 1,000 pages of content in your site to start getting good traffic.

The traffic is too low to analyze clicks to conversions. The top site has just gotten to the 30 uniques a day. I clearly see as more pages get indexed the more users are coming to the site. Maybe over the weekend I’ll clean up the design a bit. Either that or I’ll test out putting up 2 more sites but I want to use a different platform next time.

These sites are in the shopping category. I’ve been also working months on a travel solution & might have one site up over the long holiday weekend here in Tokyo.

I can add more ads later mainly at first I want the traffic.
